Annie Lee Moss was an African-American government employee who was falsely accused of being a communist spy during the Cold War era in the United States. Moss worked as a file clerk in the Army Signal Corps in 1950 and was accused of passing classified information to the Soviet Union. She was interrogated by the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) in 1954 and was one of several people who were falsely accused and publicly shamed during the era of McCarthyism. Moss was eventually exonerated and cleared of all charges, but the experience left her traumatized and financially ruined. Her story is remembered as an example of the injustice and hysteria of the anti-communist witch-hunts that took place in the 1950s.
